Certification module
ACAN for Prestigious Assets
How ACAN authenticates, proves and certifies art, gems and other unique, high-value objects.
ACAN for Prestigious Assets is the certification module for unique, high-value physical objects: fine art first, with gems, jewelry and other collectibles alongside it. Its job is to establish, beyond reasonable doubt, that an object is genuine, that its ownership is clean, and that the specific object held in custody is the one that was certified. Everything an issuer or investor later relies on is built on that foundation.
The core challenge: no public registry
Real estate has a county recorder and a patent has a national office, but art and collectibles have no public title registry at all. That absence is why provenance research matters so much here. For a prestigious asset, the reconstructed history of ownership does the work a public register does elsewhere, and authenticity, not liens, is the central risk.
How an object is certified
- Intake and compliance. The owner submits the object with its title documents, invoices, and known exhibition and publication history. The owner and any beneficial owners pass identity (KYC) and anti-money-laundering checks, including on the source of funds.
- Provenance and title. A provenance researcher reconstructs the chain of ownership and flags gaps, with particular care for sensitive periods and for antiquities. Stolen-art and loss registries are searched, and counsel reviews export licences, cultural-property restrictions, and any endangered-materials status.
- Authentication. A recognized expert, artist foundation, or catalogue raisonné committee gives an opinion, supported by scientific material analysis where the value or the doubt warrants it.
- Proof of existence. A certified professional examines, photographs and scans the object, capturing a unique physical fingerprint, and a conservator records its condition.
- Valuation. An appraiser working to recognized professional standards sets a fair market value against comparable sales.
- Custody and legal wrapper. The object moves to a secure vault or freeport, where its fingerprint is re-checked on arrival to prove the object in custody is the object that was certified. Title is then conveyed into a special-purpose vehicle, executed before a notary.
- Certification and anchoring. ACAN issues the certificate and a tamper-evident digital record of title and condition, and anchors that record on-chain.
From certification to issuance
ACAN certifies; it does not issue securities. Once an object is certified, a licensed issuer structures and fractionalizes the interest under the applicable regime, and ACAN's attestations of custody and condition feed that issuer's workflows. Because a prestigious asset usually produces no regular income, the events that matter are custody, loans, exhibition and sale, rather than rent.
Ongoing assurance
Certification is not a one-time stamp. Each time the object moves, its condition is re-documented and its identity re-confirmed, so the record stays true for as long as the object is in the system.
