Certification module

ACAN for Media Assets

How ACAN certifies ownership shares, catalog contents and royalty routing for music, film and media rights.

ACAN for Media Assets is the certification module for music, film and other media rights. These assets are pure rights rather than physical objects, and they are unusually tangled: a single song carries two separate copyrights, the composition and the recording, often owned by different people, and a track can have many rights holders across writers, publishers, labels and featured artists. ACAN certifies who owns which share, what a catalog actually contains, and how income should route.

Why media is different

Media has the cleanest cash story of any asset class ACAN handles. Performing-rights organizations, the mechanical licensing collective, SoundExchange and the streaming services already send royalty statements on a schedule. What the industry handles poorly is matching those statements to verified ownership, and that matching is where ACAN's value lies.

How a catalog is certified

  1. Verify title. Identify the writers, publishers, label and featured artists, and confirm the ownership shares across both the compositions and the recordings.
  2. Identify and value. Match works to their industry identifiers, reconcile the royalty statements from rights organizations and streaming services against verified ownership, and value the catalog on its net publisher and label share.
  3. Wrap and record. Record ownership with the copyright office, and place the rights or a royalty interest into a special-purpose vehicle.
  4. Certify. ACAN certifies each work, the catalog as a whole, and the map of how income should be split, and anchors the record on-chain.
  5. Route payouts. Collection sources pay the vehicle, and each certified payout attestation releases a distribution to investors through a licensed issuer.

Ongoing assurance

ACAN monitors for the risks particular to media rights: ownership-split disputes, income that cannot be matched to a known owner, and author termination rights that can change who owns a work over time.
